Program RAIN 2024

A total of seven 5,000-liter GAMA-Rain Filters* were installed in the village of Girimulyo, Panggang City, Gunung Kidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
The GAMA-Rain Filter is a simple, three-stage rainwater filtration and storage system that does not require electricity.

2024 Progress Update

Launch of Program RAIN

At the beginning of 2024, together with our partner GIB, we conducted a survey on water usage in households that had already installed rainwater storage systems in various regions of Indonesia. Based on the findings, we identified target areas for future support.
In July, foundation members and GIB staff conducted an on-site survey in the village of Girimulyo, Panggang City, Gunung Kidul Regency, one of the candidate locations for support. They visited households for further research and held a meeting with various stakeholders to explain the planned activities.

Current situation in the village

This region is a limestone mountainous area; therefore, rainwater cannot be retained by the soil and cannot become a source of groundwater. Additionally, access to piped water is limited.
As a result, residents have traditionally relied on rainwater for their daily needs. About 30 years ago, the government provided support to install concrete rainwater storage tanks, which are still in use today.
However, after several decades, these tanks have deteriorated—they lack filtration systems, and the rain gutters used to collect water from rooftops have become rusted. This has led to inefficient water collection and concerns over water quality.
Furthermore, some households do not have their own storage tanks, meaning they must rely on neighbors for water or purchase it from private suppliers to meet their daily needs.

The concrete rainwater storage tanks provided by the government about 30 years ago lack filtration systems and have deteriorated over time.

Installation of the GAMA-Rain Filter rainwater storage system

Through these efforts, a decision was made to install 5,000-liter GAMA-Rain Filters in public facilities such as community centers and shared areas accessible to multiple households for public use. In addition to installing the GAMA-Rain Filters, we conducted a survey on local water issues and water quality testing of daily-use water, as well as developing instructional manuals for residents on system usage and maintenance.
In October, the installation of seven 5,000-liter GAMA-Rain Filters was completed in the village of Girimulyo. The installation work was carried out under the guidance of GIB, with the cooperation of local residents who had experience and expertise in construction. This initiative also contributed to temporary local employment opportunities during the project.

Installation ceremony and planning for the next phase

In November, foundation members visited the site again to hold an installation ceremony together with GIB members and to discuss activities for the next phase. The ceremony was attended by the village mayor, as well as leaders from municipal and regional public works departments, who expressed their deep appreciation for the initiative. Participants also engaged in discussions to strengthen future collaboration and deepen community ties.

The rainy season began during this time, and as the newly installed tanks started to fill with water,
smiles spread across the community
